PokerStars has announced it is teaming with amfAR, a noted AIDS research foundation, to host a charity tournament supporting AIDS awareness during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in January 2010.
Sports stars, high-profile charity celebrities and poker pros are expected to take part in the $5,250 event set for Jan. 8 at the Atlantis Resort and Casino on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
Half the prize pool will go to amfAR to support the organization’s research and help raise HIV/AIDS awareness, the press release stated.
Notables who have confirmed their participation include tennis legend Boris Becker, former National Hockey League great Mats Sundin, French rugby star Sebastien Chabal and Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu.
“PokerStars is bringing a truly innovative and fulfilling cause to the PCA this year through their partnership with amfAR”, Negreanu said in the press release.
As a member of Team PokerStars Pro, I feel very lucky to be able to participate in, and contribute to, such a worthwhile cause in the name of AIDS research.
The press release added that PokerStars.net and PokerStars.com will run special online qualifying satellites before the event to give players from all over the world a chance to be involved. Qualifiers can win a trip to the Bahamas and play alongside the celebs, sports stars and poker pro’s in the amfAR event.
PokerStars.net will host regular freerolls from now until Dec. 6 while PokerStars.com will be running $5 satellites until Dec. 13.
